ore stockings and long sleeves.I balked at stockings but not the drink.When we arrived at the Aga Khan’s house we were greeted by his English wife Betty elegant prom dresses , a former model who wore a sleeveless dress, bare legs and sandals and was drinking a martini.The waiter came by with a myriad of cocktails.So you never can tell.Bang Bang Baby, the new period genre musical from Jeffrey St.Jules premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, is a mash-up of teen melodrama, drive-in romance and B-movie sci-fi of the 1950s.The visual effects include green screens, rear projection and a highly stylized art direction.This is a detail of one of our many mood boards that helped shape the wedding dress Stepphy wears.Thought it might be interesting to look a little behind the scenes, an ‘exclusive,’ if you will, about the process.It’s set in a small fictional Canadian border town that hosts an unexpected visit from a matinee idol after his car breaks down.Despite the over-the-top stuff in the film, the Canadian director explains that he wanted the costume to be true to the characters.We have to feel like these characters are real and you connect with that.Our hero, Stepphy, inhabits a candy-coloured world, from her girly eyelet blouses to the sea shells of her bedroom’s iridescent wallpaper.The inspirations for the teen singer included Jacques Demy’s The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and Ann-Margret from Viva Las Vegas.surrounded by men in her life who want her to stay in the town: her dad, an alcoholic who she dotes on, and the local chemical plant owner who wants to marry her.As the crooner Bobby Shore dark purple prom dresses , Justin Chatwin (Shameless) has a skunk stripe in his hair and a swagger in his hips, equal parts Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Grand Ole Opry.but we didn’t want it to feel like an Elvis impersonation so we were looking for an actor who wouldn’t do that.We wanted him to feel iconic.I think it’s as much in the way he carries himself, with an easy confidence.Creating the looks for a retro-post-apocalyptic Peggy Sue Got Married that owes as much to Forbidden Planet as Guy Maddin, Bang Bang Baby’s costume designer Sarah Millman shares notes from her production diary on these pages.Jeff wanted poufy and over the top;
