Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jake Muzzin scored the game-winning goal with 3:37 to play as the Los Angeles Kings rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday. Tyler Toffoli returned to the lineup after a six-game absence due to mononucleosis and delivered the game-tying goal and Jeff Carter finished with two goals and an assist for the Kings, who halted a four-game slide. Jonathan Quick stopped 26-of-29 shots in the win. Patrick Sharp and Patrick Kane each finished with a goal and an assist, Andrew Shaw also lit the lamp and Corey Crawford allowed four goals on 27 shots for the Blackhawks, who won their two previous games. The Kings tied the game with 6:11 to play. After Carter took the puck off the boards, Dwight King shuffled a backhander to Toffoli, who wristed a shot past a screened Crawford for a 3-3 game. Muzzin put the Kings in front after his shot from the point deflected off the stick of Blackhawks defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson before going past Quick. Hossa threatened on a wraparound and Jonathan Toews rang a shot off the post with under a minute to play, but Quick covered up the puck to halt the frenetic sequence. Chicago also pulled Crawford, but was unable to force overtime. Kane started the scoring just 1:58 into the game. David Runblad took a cross- ice pass from Sharp and fired a shot from the right side. The puck was blocked by a Kings defender, but Kane was there to wrist it into the net. Carter emerged from behind the net, skated toward the left circle and turned around to beat Crawford with a short-side wrister for a tie game at 8:42 of the first period. Three minutes later, Sharp took Kanes feed and beat Quick with a quick shot from the left circle to give the Blackhawks a 2-1 edge. On the power play, Carter score his second of the night on a rising wrister from the right circle for a 2-2 game 1:45 into the middle stanza. Shaw put Chicago in front 2:25 into the third. Teuvo Teravainen skated through the neutral zone and into the slot before passing the puck to Shaw, who scored on a wrister over the glove of Quick. Steve Oleksy, Jason Chimera and Mikhail Grabovski scored second-period goals in the Capitals 4-1 win over the Rangers. "We felt them deflate a little bit," Oleksy said. Washington defenceman Nate Schmidt added a goal in the third for the Capitals, who beat Nashville at home on Saturday. Schmidt, a 22-year-old rookie, scored his first NHL goal in that game. Grabovskis goal came on a penalty shot. In his fourth NHL game, Philipp Grubauer made 30 saves for Washington (16-12-2) to earn his first career win. The Capitals have won four of five. "Its a huge pressure, but he handled it," Capitals star forward Alex Ovechkin said. "Its good for him and its good for us." New York (15-15-1), beaten at home in overtime by New Jersey on Saturday, has lost three of five. Henrik Lundqvist made 32 saves, and Benoit Pouliot scored the Rangers lone goal with 1:53 left to spoil Grubauers shutout bid. The Rangers are 0-1-1 on their team-record, nine-game homestand. Following the loss, the Rangers held a players-only, closed-door meeting for about 15 minutes. The meeting was at least the second they have held this season. "Its one of those things. Much of the game was played on the perimeter as both teams clogged the middle of the ice in their defensive zones. Washington recorded 36 shots, and New York finished with 31. "We checked them pretty good," Chimera said. "It was one of those games that we didnt give them much, which is really good." Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play. Despite the playoff history between the two teams, the game lacked emotion outside of several scrums. Offensive stars Ovechkin and Rick Nash of the Rangers were given roughing penalties during a late second-period dust-up. "Just a hockey play," Nash said. "He was finishing his check, and I was trying to get a spark for the guys." By the end of the game, many of the announced 18,006 in attendance had left. Those that remained offered the Rangers a less-than-stellar job performance evaluation. "We should be the ones dictating everything," McDonagh said. "Especially home games, its been too easy for teams coming in here. (We need to) come out with a lot of fire and get some hits, some blocked shots and get the crowd into it. "They really had nothing to stand up for tonight, and its something were ashamed of. Its something we take some pride in here and try (to) correct." NOTES: New York D Marc Staal sat out after being injured Saturday against New Jersey. Rangers coach Alain Vigneault described the ailment as "neck issues which are causing him to have some symptoms." Staal, who has a history of concussions, hadnt yet been diagnosed with another. "Were taking every precaution," Vigneault said. "Well probably know more in the next day or two."
