Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Yankees placed first baseman Mark Teixeira on the 15-day disabled list prior to Saturdays game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Teixeira left Fridays game against the Blue Jays in the second inning with a right hamstring strain. He suffered the injury while fielding a bouncing foul ball and left the field before being replaced by Kelly Johnson, who moved over from his spot at third. Johnson will take over as the everyday first baseman in Teixeiras absence. Teixeira is batting .250 (3-for-12) with two RBI in four games this year. He was limited to just 15 games last season due to a wrist injury that required surgery. Catcher Austin Romine was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill the roster spot. FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots have placed the franchise tag on Wes Welker, the receiver who caught more passes than anyone else in the NFL last season but couldnt come down with one that might have clinched a Super Bowl victory. Welker twisted to reach for the ball, which was thrown behind him, but it bounced off his hands. "The ball is right there," Welker said. "Ive just got to make the play." The Patriots failed to make a first down, and the Giants then drove down the field for the go-ahead touchdown in a 21-17 victory. Ever since, New England fans have been debating whether the play was Welkers fault or Bradys. Welker, 30, is one of two receivers with more than one season of at least 120 catches, along with Cris Carter. He joins Marvin Harrison and Jerry Rice as the only players in NFL history with four 100-catch seasons. In his eight-year career, Welker has 650 receptions for 7,226 yards and 32 touchdowns.
